2018 The East Asian School of Information Theory and Communication
The first IEEE East Asian School of Information Theory and Communication (EASITC) took place between Aug. 6th and Aug. 10th 2018 at the National Taiwan University (NTU) in Taipei, Taiwan. EASITC is the first international information theory school in East Asia and follows the tradition of the European and North American schools. Although this was the first instance of this event, EASITC actually builds upon a number of local initiatives, such as the Croucher Summer Course in Information Theory (CSCIT), organized in Hong Kong by Prof. Sid Jaggi, the Summer School on Information & Communication Theory in Taiwan and the Communications and Information Sciences Summer Workshop in Korea.
In order to foster student interest, this EASITC experimented with a 2-day tutorial part, targeted to graduate students, and a 3-days advanced topics part, targeted to doctoral and post-doctoral students.
The invited speaker for the tutorial part were Borching Su (@NTU,TW), and Jinwoo Shin (@KAIST,KR). The invited speaker for the advanced topic part were Krishna Narayanan (@TAMU, USA), Sennur Ulukus (@UMD, USA), and Elza Erkip (@NYU, USA).
The tutorial part was attended by about 150 students, while the advanced topic part by about 50 students.
EAITC also featured a poster competition and group discussions. Among the social events, the students enjoyed an “Escape room” adventure game, a variety show with a magic performance and a walking tour of the Taipei.
We wish to thank all the participants, student volunteers and invited speakers for making this event an unforgettable one. We were very pleased with the attendance to the event and to the interest the students have shown toward the tutorials and lectures. We were particularly impressed by the lively interaction among students which developed through various technical and social events. Indeed this was the main goal of this initiative for us: to foster a relationship among students of different countries and backgrounds which will strengthen the cooperation among institutions and IEEE chapter in the East Asian regions.
We sincerely hope that the next edition of EASITC will see the interested and active participation of students, many of which returning after this year’s event.
We look forwad to 2019 EASITC to be hosted in Hong Kong!
